About this collection

The Evelyn Waugh Studies Collection comprises the entire back-catalogue of the Evelyn Waugh Newsletter (1967-1989), Evelyn Waugh Newsletter and Studies (1990-2010) and Evelyn Waugh Studies (2011-). It has been made available on Special Collections Online as part of the AHRC Complete Works of Evelyn Waugh project, based in Leicester's School of English.

John Howard Wilson, the current editor of Evelyn Waugh Studies, writes:

Paul A. Doyle, founder of the Evelyn Waugh Newsletter

Evelyn Waugh Studies is the official publication of the Evelyn Waugh Society. The journal is intended to stimulate research in the life and writing of Evelyn Waugh.

Originally the Evelyn Waugh Newsletter, the journal is the brainchild of the late American scholar Paul A. Doyle (left), who edited it from 1967-1998. Based at Nassau Community College in the New York Metropolitan Area, Professor Doyle charged modest subscription fees and addressed each of 200 issues by hand. In 1990, the journal became Evelyn Waugh Newsletter and Studies. Professor Doyle finally stopped editing the journal due to ill health.

After a four-year hiatus, Evelyn Waugh Newsletter and Studies resumed publication in electronic format in 2002. The journal was renamed Evelyn Waugh Studies in 2011.

Evelyn Waugh Studies continues to publish essays, notes, and news about Waugh and his work, along with reviews of relevant books, films, recordings, plays, and television productions. Issues appear three times per year, in the Spring, Autumn, and Winter.

In retrospect, this collection is a unique compendium of international scholarship's growing understanding of an important writer. The journal has long provided a forum for the development of bibliography, the publication of primary documents, and the interpretation of Waugh's works.
