PREFACE . • .AN examination of the following pages will prove that no exertion has been spared to render the Directory worthy its circulation; so infinitely beyond that of any similar Work. The" Street Directory," now first introduced, is on a plan more comprehensive than that of any other London ·H Street Guide;" it includes GENTRY, as UJell as MERCHANTS and TRADESPEOPLE; and the superiority of its arrangement will be observed by any one reguiring, for any purpose, a "Street Directory." In it, the intersection of any principal street by others is distinctly shown; and any person Wishing to go -fm· instance-to 2.50 Oxford-street, has but to turn to page 193 to find that the number is near Hyde Park; while, if 400 were the point, it would be immediately seen that only to Dean-street was the distance to be traversed. A considerable addition to the previous number of names has been made; the amount of increase may be judged from the fact, that the" Trades' Directory," which, in the last Edition, was comprised in 194, now occupies 248 pages. The" Law Directory" has been, in every possible way, revised, corrected, and improved; it will be found the most accurate Law Guide extant. · The " Parliamentary Directory " is unive1·sally admitted to be superior to the corresponding matter in any other book. The" Court Directory" is entirely new, and consists of the names of all persons in the "Street Directory" not .engaged in Trade. The Post Office information is given, it is believed, with a perspicuity equal to its paramount importance; in it are included the Regulations for carrying into full effect the new eystem for the R.:EG%STR.AT%0N OE" LETTERS, whereby SECURITY is afforded to those having contents of value. It cannot be necessary to state, in detail, all the improvements effected in the present Edition. Every division of the book, and every page, contains much that cannot be found in any other book for the year 1841. T11e very late information now published has been obtained by means of the peculiar resources so graciously placed at the disposal of the Proprietor, through the favour of HER l\IAJESTY's PosTliiASTER-GENERAL. Thus every particle of tl1e immense amount of information contained in the following pages has .been collected by upwards of 2-30 agents, :possessing local knowledge, during the the latter part of the month of NovEMB-ER, and very much EVEN IN THE :PRESENT MONTH. Were but few collectors engaged, so that divisions of the vast metropolis must be taken IN ROTATION, it would be unavoidable to apply in the majority of districts, much earlier. In the City Directory, the list of Common Couucil is that of the Members elected on the 21st of the present month. In any other Directory for 1841, the list pullished will, on examination, be found to be the list of those elected on December 21st, 1839, for the year ending on the etst of December, 1840. And so it is in every other division of the book; did space admit, thousands of instances could be adduced, in which the information is furnished A YEAR EARLIER than in any othe1· Annual Work. The Volume il now, by the introduction of the new STREET DIRECTORY, • The other imp•rtant matter, brought to the point which it has been the wish of the Proprietor, from the time the Copyright pas~d into his hands, it should attain. It has long been the most correct, and is now the most comprehensive London Direttory published. Probably, but few other additions can be advantageously made. The principle, however, on rVhich the 'York is conducted is that of continued improvement, and any change that can be effected conducive to the general utility of the Directory, will be promptly introduced, without reference to the labour or expence its itrod.uction may occasion. *,.,* Alhough price is entirely a secondary consideration to accuracy-in ~chick 1·espect thtJ Post Office Di1·ectory tkfies comptltion-it is not irrelevant to state that this Work is published at half the price of other London Directories furniJ:,hing he same amount of information. An Bition will be shortly published, price 6s. 6d., suitable to persons not engaged in business, and o mitti Jlg the ' Street r~tory," "Trades Directory," "Law Directory," "City Directory," " Parliamentary Directory.'' and much of the cher important information contained in this volume, a' that relating to General Officers, Amb "Sadors, .Consuls&:c. &c. &c.
