• 0 0 BARRY, GLAMORGANSHIRE • (Dock No. 1 was opened on July 18th, t 889, and Dock No. 2 on Oct. 10th, 1896.) Owners - - - THE BARRY RAlL\VAY COMPANY. Chairman - - - The Rt. Hon. The EARL OF PLYMOUTH. 0 General Manager - ED\VARD LAKE. Area. The Barry Doclts are u4 acres in extent, and have accommodation for the largest vessels afloat. The Sea Approach is remarkably easy owin•g to the absence of any rocks or shoals i:n this part of the Bristol Channel, and to the efficient way irf vfhich tt,e Channctl is M.ghted. Within 700 yards of the entrance to the Docks there is a Q.epth of 26 feet at fow water Spring Tides. Good Anchorage is obtained betwee!l Barry and Sully Islands. The Deep Water Lock was opened for -tra in January, 18g8, and vessels drawing 13 can enter or,leave at low water Spring Ti and during 15 days of each month drawing 18 feet can enter or leave at water. No other Do.ck in the Bristol Channel possesses a Deep-sea Entrance. Pilotage. There is a separate Pilotage Board for Barry, and Barry being nearer the sea, the Pilotage Charges are Lower than for neighbouring Ports. "Pilotage inwards or outwards is not compufsory. Towage. The Docks are provided with three powerful Tug-boats ~r movmg vessels in theDocks, which are fitted with Salvage and Fire Pumps. There is also a Steam Fire-float provided with water tank Ship Repairing, &e. 'there is a Public Graving Dock of large capacity (length 863 feet, widtl\A at top 113 feet 6 inches, width .at bottom 100 feet, width at entrance 6o feet) and capable of division into outer and inner Docks of different lf•ngths, at which ship-owners can employ their own :Marine Engineers. There are also two large PLivate Graving Docks, one capable of accommodating the the largest class of vessels. Several Marine Engineering Firms are established on the Dock property. Quayage. The Quayage is ample and extends for a len&tft of over ,.,goo feet, irrespective of the space covered by tht; Coaling Appliances. Warehousing. There$ ample accommodation for Stor,iug Goods. . Wharf Space and adj oinlng Land. The open quays are commodious, and in addition there · is an eieteMi ¥(). are,r bf h:md a v.ailable for the stacking_ of timbe:( and the storing of other goods not requ.. iring cover. Machinery and Appliances.· All is of the most improved type. There are 31 Fixed po 7 Movable Coal Tigs. By means of the able '~ipsa vessel can be loaded at three :chways simultaneously. Each Coal Tip two Weighbridges: wagg~ns can there> r" be weighed when .. full and when empty. ,,,~ re-taring is done free of charge. Cranage. The Cranage equipment is coq1plete 56 Cranes, ranging in capacity from 30 .cwL to 5o tons, including a Floating Crane. have been provided. Lighting. The Docks are lighted Electrically throughout. ! Dock Charges. Thyse me much below the average of other great Ports. ' Return Cargoes. A great advantage is that vessels call generally obtain an outward cargo from Bar(y, thus obviating the :qecessity of changing Ports. Railway Accommodation. There is a complete system of Railway Lines around the Docks, and goods can be shipped direct from, or loaded direct into, Railway Trucks. The Company's Railway is connected with all the railways in the Country, and the rates. quoted for the carriage of Merchandise to and from ship at Cardiff are also applicable to and from ship at Barry. The Company's Passenger Trains run through .to Cardiff at 'frequent intervals. The Shipping Tonnage 'frequenting the Docks annually is about 5,000,000 tons N. R. T.
