GLOUCESTER. 7 The Severn is remarkable for its tide which rapidly -flon's by Gloucester son1etimes rising on the surface of the river as tnuch as nine feet and impetuously rolls on in one noisy and infuriate \vave, called the ' Hygre' 'Eag·re' or 'Bore,' which is usually highest at the fifth return, after the change and full of the moon. In titnes past when (j loucester was noted for its manufacture of woollen cloths, 'vool-stapling \vas an in1portant branch, but these have long fell into decay. In 1625 the manufacture of pins was introduced here, previous to this, the ladies used fine scraped skewers and the prickles of thorns, to fasten their clothes together. 'fhese last were generally n1ade in Wales, by the Welch won1en, who ingeniously scraped and polished them,and gave thetn the nan1e of ''Pin Drawers." The process of the pin manufactory is curious; the article, small as it is, passes through nearly t\venty distinct processes before it is per· fected. There are at thiu time two pin manufactories here, t\vo extensive iron foundries, three soaperies, two stean1 flour n1il1s, a brewery, a parchment n1anufactory, and three steam sa''' mills, which, with· ship, boat, and barge building, hen1p and · flax dressing, rope, sack, saiJ, and brush making~, cotnLined with a very considerable trade carried on in corn, coal, timber, malt and hops (especially in corn, which has become an important feature in the in1ports and exports at this port,) together with the large quantity of coals and culn1 shipped coastwise, furnish employn1ent for a vast n utn ber of persons. The Provision 1.\tlarkets, in Eastgate and Southgate streets, are open on Wednesday and Saturday; the former is well supplied with butchers~ meat, poultry, fruit, veg·etables, &c., and the latter with butter, eggs, fish, &c. A corn Inarket is also held on Saturday in Eastgate street, and a large cattle market the first Monday in every rnonth, on a spacious piece of ground, conveniently fitted up for the purpose, called the N e\v Market, adjoining the raihvay stations. · Fairs are held on April 5th, July 5th, September 28th and 29th, and Novetnber 28th ; all fo.r cattle, horses, and pigs, except the 29th of September, which is for pleasure; the Septen1ber fair is noted for. onions, these are rnade up into ropes, several feet in length, here called traces. On the three successh;e Mondays after the last fair, the " l\:lop," as it is termed, is held; on these days it is custo1uary for large numbers of young n1en and wo1nen fron1 the adjacent villages to assemble
